Welcome to the summer term. It's going to be a busy one in Phoenix class. Year 6 will be preparing to take their SAT's in May, if any parent would like any information on this, please feel free to come and talk me about them.
Year 5 and 6 both have their residential trips this term, keep updated on these on our week ahead sheets.
Phoenix class will also be taking part in the £5 challenge; where the children have £5 to set up their own business and make as much money as possible. Last year Dragon Class did fantastically and I can see this happening again this year.
At the end of the year, there will be a performance by the class, which we will begin practicing soon to make sure that we are word perfect in July. Information on this will be on the week ahead sheet shortly.
In our English lessons, we will be starting with non-fiction texts, writing reports and newspaper articles. We will also be looking at narratives and poetry. We will be focusing on the understanding of texts and answering questions on them. We will have GPS (grammar, punctuation and spelling) daily and the children will be expected to use this within their daily work.
Reading is an important skill, one which the children use everyday. Therefore, it is a major focus within our teaching. Each child will be heard reading at least once a week, either in our English lessons or guided reading sessions. Reading books should be taken home every night with the expectation that the children read for at least 15 minutes at least five times a week.
MathsThis term we will be focusing on how to explain our answers to questions. We will be looking at reasoning and using and applying the skills that we have learnt.
In science we will be studying Living things and animals and their habitats. We have some exciting experiments lined up - look for photographs on the website!
During our topic lessons the children will be learning about the environment and the natural world. We will look at how we can help our planet and hopefully using this within school. We will also be studying natural disasters and the world around us.
In term 5 we will be learning about Sikhism and in term 6, how to be a good person.
PE will be on a Wednesday, so please make sure that your children have their kits in school on this day. Please check the uniform policy for the correct items of kit. On hot and sunny days, children may wear hats and sunscreen.
Homework will be given out on a Monday with the expectation that it will be returned the following Monday. It will consist of a piece of maths, English and spellings.
Weekly timetables will be uploaded to the website. These will contain the lessons and learning objectives for the week.
It's going to be an exciting term filled with hard work and lots of fun (and hopefully a lot of sunshine!).
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to come and speak to me.
