Welcome to Phoenix Class page

Year 5 and 6 are important years at primary school, when the children face a large number of changes and pressures.  As your child’s teachers, we understand these challenges and we are here to help, support and guide your child through these turbulent times.  We both have high expectations and expect each of the children to have the same for themselves.  We are looking forward to working with your children and yourselves to achieve their full potential.

In our English lessons, we will be looking at classic fiction, recounts, poetry, instruction and explanation texts.  The children will be given the opportunity to explore texts in these genres, further their understanding, and through emersion in these texts, they will have the chance to write in these styles.  As with all good authors, the children will edit and improve their work, learning how to develop their writer’s voice and create pieces that they are proud of.

Grammar, punctuation and spelling

Grammar and punctuation will be taught both separately and within English lessons.  We will be covering the objectives from the National curriculum.  Spellings will be taught within lessons, looking at patterns, conventions and letter strings.

Reading is an important skill, one which the children use everyday.  Therefore, it is a major focus within our teaching.  Each child will be heard reading at least once a week, either in our English lessons or guided reading sessions.  Reading books should be taken home every night with the expectation that the children read for at least 15 minutes at least five times a week.

Over the next two terms, we will be studying place value, calculations, fractions, measure and shape.  We ask that at home the children practise the KIRF’s (which will be sent home each term) and their multiplication tables.

In science we will be learning about electricity and how to build circuits.  The children will be given the opportunity to make and test circuits using a range of different components, they will be asked to draw them and have the chance to carry out investigations.

During our topic lessons the children will be learning about the Victorians.  We will cover various different aspects of the era, culminating in a Victorian day where the children can dress up and attend ‘Victorian school’.

Christianity is the religion that we will be learning about over the next two terms, specifically symbols, religious expression and of course Christmas.

PE will be on a Wednesday, so please make sure that your children have their kits in school on this day.  Please check the uniform policy for the correct items of kit.

Homework will be given out at the beginning of each term.  The grid will give the children options on what they can complete for this.  However, the expectation is that the children MUST complete either a maths or an English task a week.  This needs to be handed in during the last week of term.

Weekly timetables will be uploaded to the website.  These will contain the lessons and learning objectives for the week.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to come and speak to either of us.  Mrs Oliver will be in class on Monday’s and Tuesday’s with Mrs Phipps teaching the rest of the week.  We will be in close contact with each other, sharing planning, assessment and updates.
